The Children Of Sunshine -[10]- It's A Long Way To Heaven

"I guess the first comparison to come to mind without hearing them would be The Shags, but I’d eliminate them from your mind right now. This is nowhere near as disorientating; it’s actually far better than most of the Folk the grown-ups were making at the time. Probably because most of those guys were too busy trying to build on each other’s lacklustre melodies and very often ended up sounding the same. I’d say these two girls’ songs sound much more like twee pop than straight up folk, anyway. There’s only about twenty five minutes of music here, but every track is a tune! The lyrics sometimes read like a weird stream of consciousness, like in one instance where the girls begin writing about a neighbour called Steven (not Joe), who is now known by everyone as Uncle Harry, before randomly morphing into Johnny Cash’s A Boy Named Sue for no reason other than just because! Infinitely more refreshing than the self-absorbed pseudo-poetry that constitutes most rock songwriting, anyway. This also hearkens back to a time when people were allowed to just be sweet without tempering it with heavy doses of irony and bitterness. This isn’t ironic! It’s not even kitsch, really. It’s just two really talented ten year old girls getting it together long enough to write and record ten or eleven catchy tunes before going back to being kids again."~sinagog
