Rock & Rule - "My Name is Mok" by Lou Reed - Movies That Deserve a Second Look

Movies That Deserve a Second Look... 'That'll Be the Day' (1973) and 'Stardust' (1974) are two mid-'70s films about the early days of rock 'n' roll. Starring David Essex 'Phantom of the Paradise' (1974) A wonderful rock parody directed by Brian De Palma 'Tommy' (1975) 'Tommy' was one of the first movies to tell a story with music and visuals rather than dialogue. The insane filmmaking talents of Ken Russell 'Velvet Goldmine' (1998) Todd Haynes ‘Velvet Goldmine’ is worth a second look because it covers an often-overlooked part of rock history, the glitter scene, and is loosely based on the story of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust era. (Look for Ewan MacGregor as a character clearly based on Iggy Pop.) "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' (1978) 'Rock & Rule' (1983) 'Fear of a Black Hat' (1993) There have been several films that have tried to recapture ‘This Is Spinal Tap’'s hilarious spirit a satire in 1984, by 1993 rap was begging for a parody like ‘Fear of a Black Hat,’ 'Mayor of the Sunset Strip' (2003) documentary about legendary L.A. DJ Rodney Bingenheimer profiles one of the scene's oddest ducks. At first, he comes off as pathetic, but as the documentary goes on, you grow empathetic and ultimately sympathetic toward him.

Eimuntas Nekrosius (1952-2018

Eimuntas Nekrosius (1952-2018): the theater lost “a kind of genius” The celebrated Lithuanian director, whose repeated visits to Porto were seen as events, died on Tuesday, the day before he turned 66. Only an unusual intelligence, a paradoxical intelligence, both clinical and poetic, could ever imagine that the potency of the invariably postponed desires of Olga, Macha and Irina, the three sisters of Chekhov's homonymous play, fit the metaphor of a table top. spinning, fatal as fate, on stage, minutes on end. Eimuntas Nekrosius, the Lithuanian director who died this Tuesday of a heart attack, the day before he turned 66, had this intelligence. With its monumental version of “O Idiota”, by Fiódor Dostoievski, that TNSJ opened the season, 2009/2010 on September 11 and 12, 2009 with the return of the “gross and vital theater” of Lithuanian director Eimuntas Nekrosius. The theater director, Nuno Carinhas, describes the show Os Idiotas, with which Nekrosius returns to this stage for the fifth time since 1992, as “a pièce de resistence based on O Idiota”, by Dostoievski. There are five and a half hours of theater with two breaks for breathing. All Eimuntas Nekrosius' visits to Porto were events - since the first stop at PoNTI, in December 1997, the year in which the Lithuanian director left the audience of the Teatro Nacional S. João (TNSJ) completely under the influence with a prodigious montage of “The Three Sisters” - and there is one more event Eimuntas Nekrosius on the march. It is with him, and with his monumental version of “The Idiot”, by Fiódor Dostoievski. After throwing himself at practically all the monsters of Russian literature (Gogol, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Tchékhov) and one of the founding texts of the Lithuanian language (“Estações”, by Kristijonas Donelaitis, which had a world premiere in Porto, in January 2003), Nekrosius has just arrived at an author who has always considered "extremely dangerous". “We all have something of Prince Mishkin's soul and personality. His status as an idiot is an ideal state that any of us would like to achieve ”, explained the director days before the world premiere of the play, on June 17, at the International Festival of Villa Adriana, outside Rome. There were spectators who left in the middle, noted “Corriere della Sera”, but the overwhelming majority of the audience stood up at the end of the play, at 2:30 am (the full version of “Idiots” lasts five and a half hours), for a Standing ovation of five minutes. He still doesn't know how to do short shows ("I can't tell anything in less than four hours. The more intermittent the attention, the longer the shows must be long"), and, of course, he still doesn't know how to do bad shows. Like the previous Nekrosius events that the TNSJ showed (in addition to "The Three Sisters" and "Seasons", there was a "Macbeth" in 1999 and an "Othello" in 2001), "Idiots" lives on a singular deconstruction of the text - reduced to four nuclear characters - and a very strong score of objects - a mirror, a door, beds of bars - which become an autonomous narrative. The last time he was in Porto, Nekrosius agreed to show how he performs feats with almost nothing to a group of stage directors that included the current director of TNSJ, Nuno Carinhas. “Meno Fortas shows are said to be avant-garde objects, but it seems that we are seeing the end of something. It is as if that language came from the background of the times ”, he told PÚBLICO at the end of one of the work sessions. Lúcia Sigalho, who was also there, summed up the Nekrosius event to this: "A couple of snaps right on the face". In September, we turn the other cheek.

Steve Fisk - No 2nd Chance (full version)

If Germany had its sample demiurge in Holger Hiller in the 1980s, at the same time, in the USA, a native of the northwest coast, Steve Fisk, revolutionized the universe of digital cut paste, in an album that became a work of worship, “448 Deathless Days”, published on SST in 1987. In the same year, a participation in Negativland's “Escape from Noise” drew attention to his name again. The 90s saw him working alongside Nirvana and Soundgarden or producing the debut of Screaming Trees. “999 Levels of Undo” is the logical extension of “448 Deathless Days” and another work that will go down in history.

The Band of Outsiders is a reorganized version of the Limit, a late-'70s power pop group from New York, who released their debut single in 1981 and their first full-length album, Everything Takes Forever, in 1985. They broke up in 1987. The record is from 1984 (I have it on LP), recorded 1983 and 1984. Producers Ivan Kral of Patti Smith's band. He also played on some songs. Nightclub, Pyramid, CBGB. 1985. CERTAIN GENERAL Dachau Now

another one of my favorite bands ever ... The New York band's first full-length album was originally released in France only on the L'Invitation au Suicide label in 1984; it finally came out in the United States in 1999. It's very much a record that's emblematic of the post-punk dark ages descending on the underground in the mid-1980s. Funky basslines and mannered vocals (by guitarist Parker Dulany) convey a muted anguish, somber and obtuse lyrics, and not a whole lot of melody.

Doctor Nerve: Out To Bomb Fresh Kings (Fragmento)

"These are the first two albums (1984, '87), complete on one CD, that cemented Nerve's reputation as one of New York City's most fast 'n' furious bands. The first album is somewhat more in the vein of the early 80's punk/jazz scene (Massacre, Material) than later work, and with embryonic versions of the lineup, but it still smokes. Produced by Fred Frith, Armed Observation was their second, and the definitive Nerve sound is beginning to be cemented into place. Includes some of the very earliest recordings of trumpet star Dave Douglas. Hot NYC downtown fusion."

Carl Stone Gadberry's 1989

Carl Stone was one of the first contemporary composers to take a serious look at sampling technology and Mom's is his masterpiece. With an extremely wide range of musical interests, Stone generally employed one of two strategies: either he took diverse material from unrelated sources and stitched them together to create an entirely new and amazing fabric or he took the tiniest sliver of sound and investigated microscopically, peeling away layers and unearthing incredible and hitherto-unheard material. The former is in evidence on the title track, with music from numerous geographical areas (what sounds like -- but may not be -- Haitian guitars, South American brass bands, and Eastern European accordions, among many others) being made to cohere into an exciting, rhythmically alive soundtrack from everywhere. "Gadberry's," a live performance (all pieces are titled after eateries favored by the composer), has a generally gamelan feel, with metallic, percolating percussion augmented by guitar and bass sounds that inject an ever-so-slight funky element. "Shing Kee" is an example of the second approach and is a phenomenally beautiful piece of music. Using as its source a tiny slice of the Japanese pop singer Akiko Yano singing Schubert lieders in English, Stone very gradually stretches it out from around one second to several in looped fashion. As more and more of the fragments come into the range of aural perception, the listener has the impression of an impossibly vast landscape opening up before him or her. When, about halfway through, it reaches a turning point, the result is as dramatic and startling as anything in more traditional fields of composition. Recorded between 1986-1992, the art of sampling has come a long way since and there are aspects of Mom's that could come across as quaint to someone familiar, for example, with the work of Otomo Yoshihide (who collaborated with Stone on the fine Monogatari album), but Stone's musical ideas continue to carry the day. No one has covered this area of contemporary music with more grace and acumen. Very highly recommended.

DAF - El Que (Video)

Jürgen Engler mentions “I hadn’t bought a single KRAFTWERK album” while Gabi Delgado comments that “To me, KRAFTWERK were sounding too boring, too beautiful, too sedate and too sterile” and even adds “Sequencers and Moroder. That was more important for electronic music than the entire legacy of KRAFTWERK, NEU! and LA DÜSSELDORF”. DAF’s preference for a militaristic aesthetic caused controversy and confused observers, but from the off, they were out to shock. They attracted a following which Gabi Delgado hated; his parents had escaped from the Fascist Franco regime in Spain. However, their early sequencer guru Chrislo Haas was less bothered and flirted with the ideology as a fashion statement. Their manager Bob Giddens reckons “DAF kind of overdid it later on with their hyper-Germaness” and as they hit the peak of their success, Ralf Dörper reckons they disappeared in a haze of “Sex, drugs and sequencer”. Haas eventually left DAF and went on to form alternative club favourites LIAISONS DANGEREUSES in a charged partnership with Beate Bartel of MANIA D.

Various Artists – Uneven Paths: Deviant Pop From Europe 1980-1991

Uneven Paths: Deviant Pop From Europe, 1980-1991 is the second multiple artist compilation on Music From Memory and is compiled by record connoisseur Raphael Top-Secret and label man Jamie Tiller. The compilation brings together twenty one tracks from across the continent; exploring the more unusual and unexpected sides of Pop music produced during that period. Drawing material from cult experimental artists such as Steve Beresford, Brenda Ray and Bill Nelson alongside one-off independent musical projects rescued from the fringes, ’Uneven Paths’ focuses on a selection of tracks that go beyond the confines of mainstream pop music but which also transcend expectations of much of the ’experimental’ music of the time. This is music with one foot in the avant-garde and another foot firmly rooted within the sensibilities of Pop; where Jazz musicians detour into Synth-Pop, Punk bands break into Boogie jams, and student doctors jam out on odd melodies with synthesizers and drum machines during their night shifts.

"Three things: memory, tiredness and my lungs are still not well," says Marianne Faithfull, 74, speaking to The Guardian. The singer was left with lung damage and still needs help breathing. "I may never be able to sing again. Maybe that's over," she says, based on the opinion of the doctors who follow her. "I would be extremely upset if that were the case, but on the other hand, I am 74 years old," she adds. Although the doctors told her that, most likely, her lungs will not recover, the artist is confident and says: "I believe in miracles". And in fact, even her recovery was a miracle since, according to herself, doctors did not expect her to survive when she was hospitalized. Marianne Faithfull managed to beat Covid-19 after being hospitalized in a serious condition in April 2020, but has not yet managed to get rid of the side effects left by the virus. Exactly. Any composer… would want it that way and I don’t deviate at all… somebody like Stravinsky for instance, don’t you think it would annoy him if somebody bent a note the wrong way? ’Don Van Vliet

DAVID BOWIE primeior filme 13 minutos -The Image

A continuación puedes disfrutar The Image

Gosto do campo.

The Aeon - Hymn to Pan

The Revolutionary Army of the Infant Jesus 01 Come Holy Spirit

The Revolutionary Army of the Infant Jesus- Songs of Yearning/Nocturnes 2020 : Prayer

The Revolutionary Army of the Infant Jesus- Songs of Yearning/Nocturnes. Not one, but two albums, released simultaneously by a band that have been ignoring fashions and occasionally delivering albums as and when the time is right. I was smitten by ‘Beauty Will Save the World’ their album from 2016 which set me on a trail to discover more of their music. Though I find these albums inseparable in terms of quality, it’s rare that I listen to them together, mood dictating which one I might want to listen to at any one time. Elements of folk, ambient music, Eastern European religious themes, chants, hymns and occasional bursts of (relatively speaking) turbulence weave together like very little else I’ve heard to produce music of rare transcendental beauty. Though they sound nothing like them, the feeling I get when listening to these albums is similar to when I first heard the likes of Van Morrison’s ‘Astral Weeks’, Nick Drake’s albums or Joni Mitchell’s ‘Hissing of Summer Lawns’- like hearing something unlike anything I’d heard before. For a much more eloquent and expansive review of the albums than my attempts, try the following piece by Dave Cantrell of Stereo Embers magazine:

Plantman - With the Human Race 2020

Plantman- Days of the Rocks 2020 By my reckoning, this is Plantman’s fourth album. It’s also my favourite, which is saying something as all the previous releases are excellent. Songwriter, singer and guitarist Matt Randall, along with some musician friends from the Southend area, has put together a set of songs that are so intimate and heart-warming in a squeeze-your-hand, tug-at-your-heart sense that they should come with a ‘Beware- Contains Human Emotions’ sticker. Listening to his vocals is like dipping in to a private conversation as he uses his present stage of life to reflect and better understand people and events from the past. He also has a real knack of setting his lyrics to a musical style that enriches and nourishes those words, adding further emotional heft as guitars are gently strummed with minimal adornments or as the sound is fleshed out with soaring lead guitar and heavenly harmonies. Maybe there’s something in the air around Southend way.

Aksak Maboul- Figures 1 & 2, 2020 song Taciturne

Aksak Maboul- Figures 1 & 2. This double album by a Belgian band who have been performing on and off for over 40 years is a revelation. An ever-changing line up (at one point featuring former members of Henry’s Cow) centred around founding member Marc Hollander has now settled with the addition of his wife, Veronique Vincent, on vocals. This magnificent, experimental double album requires multiple listens to even come close to revealing all its delights, despite the presence of some real ear worms. Compulsive rhythms from around the world are the back drop for a dizzying selection of jazzy, avant-garde and prog songs featuring the excellent guitar and keyboard playing of Marc. The lyrics, written and sung mainly in French by Veronique, deal with the dynamics between male and female and how things have perhaps not progressed as they should have over the years. Utterly wonderful

Tom Skelly - Inside

Tom Skelly - 'I'm Done'

Issac Navaro- album Nijua,2020 song Arie Haan

Issac Navaro- Nijua. Issac, based in Dumfries, has been a fixture on German Shepherd Records since they first started, with six releases during that period. The latest album, who’s title was apparently suggested by a 7 year old, is a heady and potent mix of post rock, ambient and electronic music which reference the likes of sci-fi writers, Dutch footballers and moon landings. In among the lush layers of synths and insistent beats there are some delicious piano melodies and, on one track, a rare vocal. I read somewhere that this could be the last album from Issac, which would be a crying shame.

Harold Nono- album We’re Nearly Home 2020 Shaking On An Iron Bed

Harold Nono- We’re Nearly Home. Harold Nono is one of several mysterious enigmas who release intriguing and interesting music through Bearsuit Records, based in Edinburgh. Difficult to pigeonhole, this album is a dynamic and experimental mix of imagined soundtracks, industrial noise, electronic and ambient music that challenges as much as it satisfies. Never less than interesting and frequently magnificent through it’s 40 odd minute roller coaster ride.

Rosie Abbott- album Magnified, 2020 song Magnified

Rosie Abbott- Magnified. The Nottingham based singer/song-writer/multi-instrumentalist/producer and sock puppet maker takes another leap forward with her third solo album. Her love of 60’s bands such as The Beatles and The Kinks shines through on her melodic songs which often take little unexpected twists and turns on their sonic journey. Lyrics that are clearly personal make her all the more loveable.

Santa Sprees - album Sum Total of Insolent Blank 2020 Sum Total of Insolent Blank

Santa Sprees- Sum Total of Insolent Blank. Here, the Anglo-Japanese duo present an album that is as epic in length as it is in scope. Full of lo fi gems with tracks that barely get started before cheerily waving goodbye to fully fledged folky pop songs which sweep you along with their infectiousness. And singer Anthony Dolphin sounds weirdly like a pre fame Tyrannosaurus Rex era Marc Bolan, which is clearly a good thing.

Lewsberg - album In This House 2020, song From Never to Once

Lewsberg- In This House. Another Dutch band with a debut album. Deceptive in that the strident guitars, which quickly settle into a groove on each song, and mainly spoken lyrics hide a quirky catchiness. Post punky in the main with hints of Lou Reed and Jonathan Richman.

Tidal Rave- album Heart Screams, 2020 song Leave It Alone

Tidal Rave- Heart Screams. Another debut from another NZ based band, this one a six-piece including three female songwriter/singer/guitarists. Densely interwoven guitars, an insistent rhythm section and organ battle constantly to produce a punchy garage rock sound which is lent variety by changes of pace and the use of four different vocalists.

Tim Holehouse album Lost, 2020 song Trapped

Tim Holehouse- Lost. Takes another left turn, introducing beats, rap, hip hop and electronica as he chronicles the struggles of coping without being on the road and gigging.

Steve Cobby - Vesica Pisces (Original Mix)

Steve Cobby- СТИВИ. The latest in a run of impressive albums mixing a variety of genres from the mix master himself. Jazzy, proggy, post rocky, trip hoppy, entirely Cobby.

Anton Barbeau - Across the Drama Pond [Audio]

Anton Barbeau - Savage Beak 2020

Anton Barbeau- Manbird. No-one does psych pop like Anton. This one comes across like a life’s travelogue with plenty of avian analogies.

Soft Fruit by Global Charming - Music from The state51 Conspiracy

Global Charming album Mediocre, Brutal, 2020 song Curveball

Global Charming- Mediocre, Brutal. Quirky post punk with Beefheartian guitars from Dutch band. Songs about the mundanity of life never sounded so good.

SONIC BOOM- SPECTRUM You're the One

After a stint with British psychotropic alt-rockers Spacemen 3, vocalist-guitarist Peter Kember (who also goes by the fitting nickname of Sonic Boom) recorded music as Spectrum beginning in 1991. Full of wooshing, synth-heavy sounds, echoey reverb, and shimmering sweet nothings, the music itself sometimes resembles like a perpetual dream sequence, something that attracted collaborators like Ohio post-rockers Jessamine, ’60s-era electronic firebrands Silver Apples, and My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields. Kember’s influence on contemporary bands couldn’t be more obvious, since he was tapped to produce and mix albums by MGMT and Panda Bear.
