RICHARD LYONS - CANCER IS STUPID

Richard Lyons with the 1968 Estus Pirkle LP "If Footmen Tire You What Will Horses Do?," which he purchased at the Pleasant Hill Salvation Army in 1982. Samples from this became the 1987 Negativland track "Christianity Is Stupid," with a video version by Negativland made in 2004.

On their Facebook page, Negativland posted a warm, richly detailed eulogy about Lyons titled CANCER IS STUPID (a twist on the group's "Christianity Is Stupid" track).

Why? I’ve got several dozens of records like this. So many, in fact, that they’ve grown to have their own section of my collection. I’m just about ready to split that section into a section of what’s going to happen when the communists take over records. Why is this one so special? Never mind that it’s currently going for a pretty penny on record auction sites. It’s the reason it is that makes it so special. It’s not only record that spawned the equally batshit crazy Ron Ormand film of the same name (go Google it. We’ll wait.).

It’s also the record from which Negativland sampled from to create the classic track from their best-selling LP Escape From Noise, Christianity Is Stupid, immortalizing Rev. Pirkle forever. In it, Pirkle can be heard entoning ‘Christianity is stupid! Communism is good! Give up!’ over and over, backed by a martial industrial, metallic beat. It got a lot of airplay on college radio. Maybe it’s the first thing you heard by them. It’s probably the closest the band’s ever had to a hit record until the U2/Casey Kasem debacle. I know I put it on a lot of mix tapes for friends for many years in the 80s.

Earlier in the day, Richard had a lively birthday party at his skilled nursing facility, where he was receiving palliative care. Present were current and founding members of Negativland, satellite Negativland members and friends, as well as other current and former members of the group appearing simultaneously on various speaker phones and digital devices. With photos being taken of people taking photos of phones, phone speakers going right and left (with a dog barking on one of them), and some new age harp being played, the afternoon felt like an Actual Negativland Performance for the ages. David “The Weatherman” Wills led the group in singing the now-public-domain “Happy Birthday" (see below for link).

Richard’s mother Evelyn called in a bit later, and her voice was the last he heard before dying. An on duty nurse commented that "I hope when I go that my last day is as good as his was." Known for his role in finding the Estus W. Pirkle LP sampled in Negativland's 1987 "Christianity Is Stupid" track (and, in turn, originating the idea of Negativland’s ax murder hoax), and for taking the wrecking yard photos that inspired the 2002 Negativland project "Deathsentences of the Polished and Structurally Weak," he was also known for such darkly funny and contrarian alter egos as his has-been radio personality Dick Vaughn, righteous religious preacher Pastor Dick, ace used car salesmen Dick Goodbody, master debater Dick Bush, good Christian lady Marsha Turnblatt and crazed DJ Jack Diekobisc (pronounced Dickobitch). His “actions” on our Over the Edge radio show became the stuff of legend, crafting such memorable events as the 1982 “format change” to an all-1970s-nostalgia station (documented on our “Dick Vaughn’s Moribund Music of the ‘70s” release) and a disastrous “live broadcast” from a Walnut Creek bowling alley on Thanksgiving, 2001 (soon to be released on CD as “Ultimate Pinsmack”).

His last weeks at the skilled nursing facility were spent with many visits and calls from friends, lots of Boston Cream Pies, watching 70s car commercials and old episodes of Match Game, being interviewed for a documentary film currently being made about the group (everyone there that day gathered 'round his bed to sing his "Nesbitt's Lime Soda Song" to him), and working on new hand made covers for an upcoming re-issue of Negativland's first LP from 1980. He kept an online station tuned to an all-70s-hits-all-the-time station, and when he finally was unable to speak, he was still tapping his fingers to the music.

RICHARD LYONS +MARK HOSLER+ DAVID WILLS

Formed in the San Francisco area, Negativland originally revolved around the talents of Mark Hosler and Richard Lyons, (aka Pastor Dick) multi-instrumentalists with an ear for tape manipulation of all sorts.

Their inspired stroke of genius was to recruit David Wills, more famously known as the Weatherman in later years, to make up the original trio.
Wills, a cable TV repairman by trade, was just as obsessed with home recording and experimentation as the other two, and his wry, drawling vocals became the core trademark for many of Negativland’s most notorious releases.

Working with a few guests such as Peter Daytonon guitar, the trio released its debut self-titled release in 1980, notable as much for its packaging (each album featured individually wallpapered covers) as for its fragmented songs and textures. Apparently, the still-teenage Hosler wanted it completed in part so he could feel he had accomplished something by the time he graduated from high school, a reasonable enough goal.

Released in 1981, Points featured the same general lineup, with a new notable guest performer being Ian Allen, credited with tape processing on one track. However, an even more important bond was made that year — the recruitment of Don Joyce.

Joyce had started a free-form radio show, Over the Edge, on the Bay Area’s KPFA station that also explored fried humor and social commentary much like Negativland itself. As a result, Hosler and company appeared one day on the show shortly after it began, and since then Joyce has not only been the only constant member of Negativland aside from Hosler, but Over the Edge has become the regular sonic testing ground for most of the band’s releases, still running strong after 20 years.

R.I.P. PRINCE

A Ana disse-me que ele me ia ligar.

A minha missão é proteger sempre a Ana. Ele adorava o Paulo Marques. A entrega sem limites do Paulo comove toda a gente. E essencialmente adorava a Ana. Era a musa dele. A Voz dela prendia-o.

R.I.P. RICHARD LYONS - NEGATIVLAND

PERFORMANCE / RÁDIO “IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD FM” NEGATIVLAND

Destacam-se álbuns como “Escape From Noise”, “Helter Stupid”, “U2”, o livro/CD “Fair Use: The Story Of The Letter U And The Numeral 2” (sobre o caso que opôs em tribunal o grupo à editora Island, sobre direitos de propriedade intelectual), e o programa de rádio “Over The Edge”.

Em “It’s All In Your Head FM”, esta estratégia é usada na construção de um documentário-colagem no formato de programa de rádio onde são levantadas questões relativas à religião (Deus, a fé,…) e às crenças do mundo nos nossos dias.

Ciclo DOCUMENTE-SE!
