November 5, 1948 "to birthday Peter Hammill and Van der Graaf Generator, for continuing to inspire generations with bold, intense, and profoundly human music."
Organ, saxophone, and a voice pushed to the limit
Peter Hammill is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, known for his intense vocal work and poetic writing that has profoundly marked rock. He performs with vocals, piano, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and bass.
He maintains continuous solo activity.
Van der Graaf Generator, formed in 1967 at the University of Manchester, England, is one of the most influential British progressive rock bands, known for albums such as Pawn Hearts, Godbluff, and H to He Who Am the Only One.
The name was inspired by the Van de Graaff generator, an electrostatic machine created by physicist Robert J. Van de Graaff.
The incorrect spelling (“Graaf” instead of “Graaff”)
It is assumed that the spelling error in the name, with an extra "r" and a missing "f," was accidental.
Peter Hammill – vocals, guitar, keyboards
Chris Judge Smith – vocals, drums, wind instruments
Nick Pearne – organ

Peter Hammill and Chris Judge Smith formed the first version at the University of Manchester in 1967 with organist Nick Pearne. After changes of city, changes in members and a theft of equipment, that group disbanded.
Hammill then recorded what began as a solo project with Hugh Banton, bassist Keith Ellis and drummer Guy Evans; Mercury released The Aerosol Grey Machine under the name Van der Graaf Generator in 1969 as part of the agreement that freed Hammill from his contract.
In Charisma, Hammill, Banton, and Evans were joined by saxophonist and flautist David Jackson and bassist Nic Potter.
Peter Hammill's songs and abruptly changing vocal interpretations are supported by Hugh Banton's organ and bass pedals, David Jackson's saxophones and flutes, and Guy Evans' extremely responsive drumming.
The guitar is present; Hammill plays it throughout the catalog, but the classic quartet doesn't rely on a permanent lead guitarist or a conventional bassist. Thus, harmony, bass, and instrumental attack are free to switch roles within a song.
Since Jackson's departure after 2005, Hammill, Banton, and Evans have worked as a trio.
