At his apogee, Syd unraveled in well-documented fashion, retreating to his Cambridge home where he made art and avoided the fame that would not die.
if you revisit his music, it’s remarkably current, and his influence can be felt in Connan Mockasin, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Holy Shit, Ariel Pink, and even Animal Collective when they’re not too busy with Beach Boys hymns.
BBC Radio 4 to listen to the radio documentary “The Twilight World of Syd Barrett.” And watch Syd playing “Jugband Blues” with Pink Floyd shortly before being kicked out of the group, in which he intones quite hauntingly:

And the sea isn’t green
And I love the queen
And what exactly is a dream
And what exactly is a joke.

The title of Pink Floyd’s first LP “Pipe at the Gates of Dawn” was, in fact, Kenneth Grahame "The Wind & the Willows" taken from Chapter 7 of “The Wind & Willows,” when Rat and Mole watch as the Moon disappears and a bird begins piping to herald the dawn. Rat says to Mole, “So beautiful and strange and new. Since it was to end so soon, I almost wish I had never heard it. For it has roused a longing in me that is pain, and nothing seems worth while but just to hear that sound once more and go on listening to it for ever. No! There it is again!”
